System Engineer 1

Position Description: 
Technical activities that involve activities associated with the design, construction, implementation and/or ongoing support of State or Client Agency’s technology infrastructure, including, but not limited to networking, security, hardware platforms, virtualization environments, and enterprise storage solutions.  System Engineering is multi-dimensional, requiring that individuals possess a solid understanding of the fundamentals of technology infrastructure and how it support critical State and Client Agency business systems.  Individuals in these positions may be assigned to a variety of activities, based on the needs of the Client Agency or the State.

Competencies

Maintains, analyzes, troubleshoots, and repairs computer systems, hardware, and computer peripherals. Documents, maintains, upgrades or replaces hardware and software systems. Performs basic operation, monitoring, installation, trouble shooting, or maintenance of computer equipment.  Identifies and resolves basic data communications problems.  Provides assistance in the design, development, and maintenance of various system applications.  Provides technical assistance and support for applications and hardware problems. Installs, maintains, moves, and assists in testing and upgrading new and existing hardware/software.  Assists in monitoring and providing assistance on the use and interface of systems, subsystems, and software applications. 
Prepares or assists in the preparation of service record documentation. Shows awareness of standards and regulatory requirements related to assigned tasks.  May assist in the review and recommendation of the procurement of information resources hardware or software. May write and update personal computer and mainframe application programs. Knowledge of the practices, principles, and techniques of computer operations, of information systems, of computer software and hardware, and of information security policies and procedures. Skill in the use and support of personal computers, in the use of applicable programs and systems, and in troubleshooting information systems.  Maintains the necessary security controls. 

Basic experience in Level 1 and 2 troubleshooting, repair, construction or support of hardware, networking, and software system. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.   May have experience with one or more commercial infrastructure products.   May need to rely on written instructions or procedures to perform the functions of the job.  Although routine supervision is required by a State supervisor or manager, this individual can be expected to complete assignments with little or no additional supervisory support.
